My current body of paintings are a departure from dancers but continue my research into movement and the problems of translating this into two dimensional images. These paintings are not traditional equine art. I am really exploring mark making as opposed to the equestrian subject. I am a keen horsewoman and think that the experience I have contributes to the accuracy and excitement of these images.
Drawing underpins all my practice. I love the challenges of drawing from life. My concern with the depiction of movement has led me to work with dance companies and performers. I produce hundreds of drawings at rehearsals that are starting points for paintings,sculptures and film. I recently spent a year with Butoh dancers. I often think of my paintings in terms of drawing -the laying down or removal of marks.
My sculptural work is often of a temporary and fragile nature. Many of my sculptures are designed to be moved around the body in live performance or for film. I am interested in what performers do to my objects and the changes the sculpture undergoes. Sometimes I give the performer guidelines but I am more excited by their spontaneous responses to the piece. This work has been seen in as part of street theatre,residencies site specific work ,on sculpture trails and in more traditional gallery and theatre settings.
My films are closely linked to my sculptural practice .My sculptures are often temporary and site specific in nature-all that remains of them is documentation on film. I have also been commissioned to make short films the most recent an underwater film for projection at the Pegasus theatre in Oxford. I examine objects in other films giving them an abstract form-I love everyday things we take for granted drawing attention to them.
